Mending a Broken Heart

The Boy has a girlfriend. She started at his school in 1st grade. She liked him all of 2nd grade and he found out at the end of the year. All of 3rd grade, they liked each other. Then, last year, we moved here. The Boy spent the whole day with Girlfriend and her family the day before we moved. He was so sad when we moved and it broke our hearts.

Last week, Girlfriend was nearby for some sort of summer enrichment leadership school. She finished Thursday evening and we all got together Friday at the zoo. Girlfriend’s mom and I took over 400 pictures; it was such a nice zoo! After the zoo, we were looking for someplace to eat...our hearts were set on Japanese but the place in town had closed. Girlfriend had been trying to convince her mom to come to our house anyway so I mentioned we have a good Japanese restaurant here, which was all it took. We all came back here for dinner and they spent the night (it was Girlfriend, her mom, and her grandma). The kids stayed up till around 11:30 when we made them go to sleep (we were all tired). Girlfriend had to leave pretty early yesterday morning and The Boy has been a mess since then. He cried on and off all day yesterday - again, it totally broke my heart! He kept saying how he wants to move back “home” NOW, not later. I cried too - and even The Husband was misty-eyed.

Incidentally, I tried to explain to The Boy that ice cream would totally make him feel better...and that he was beyond the single dip...this was DEFINITELY a double-dip situation, but he wasn't even interested in that! I'm no longer certain he is, in fact, my child.

PS - here are some zoo pix.

  1. OOH! First love, it is a double edged sword! I remember my first broken heart! It was an entire half gallon affair. Love the zoo pics.
    P.S. Thanks for the link!

  3. Oh how sad.......a heart that a double scoop won't mend is truly broken. Great zoo pictures!

  4. So sweet! Maybe he needed a waffle cone thrown in to sweeten the deal? My mom used to make "boy cookies" when I had a boy-related meltdown - rice crispy treats w/ coconut and choc chips. To this day, they still hit the spot!
It looks like all of the animals are posing for you. Esp the gorilla with his over the shoulder glance.

  5. Oh gosh--the boy/girl thing DOES start early, doesn't it? The thing I absolutely HATE is when the bf or the gf breaks my baby's heart. That does happen every so often as they get older. BTW, LOVE the zoo pixes--our cousins are coming out to visit next week, and think we'll make a zoo trip, too! Just wanted to remind you, bloggy bud, that today's the last day of our Great Pop'rs Giveaway. Plus, we're still conducting a Contact Oprah campaign, trying to get Uncle Lynn & Pop'rs on TV. So come on by and join the fun!

  7. My son's little girlfriend moved away a few months ago. It was very sad for him, poor kid.

Do you think ice cream only fixes girl hearts? My husband doesn't get it either.

  10. You pictures are great. I think I recognized myself in the 4th picture. You poor son. I'm thinking perhaps the whole pint. I'm just saying...
