The FIRST time can be a charm, too!

About six months ago, I was talking to a friend at work. She asked me what The Boy's last name is. Confused, I answered her. She then asked me what my last name is. Again, I told her. She was confused this time. She cocked her head to the side and said "Oh. I thought he was from your first marriage."

WHAT?! He is from my first marriage. So is The Girl. I'm still ON my first marriage. My first marriage is my ONLY marriage. Don't get me wrong...I know divorce is extremely prevalent and all, but seriously? To make the assumption that everyone over a certain age must be on a second or third marriage is ridiculous. Guess what...MY PARENTS are still on their first marriage. It's been 45 years, so I'm thinking they're going to go ahead and stick with it.

My marriage is obviously not that old. Today is my anniversary. 13 years ago, The Husband and I were married in a ridiculously HOT ceremony. It was in the middle of a heatwave and it'd been over 100* for about 10 days in a row. It's funny because we thought the wedding was awful. The guests thought it was beautiful, but The Husband and I didn't see that. We saw the wilted salads, the melting sorbet, fans all throughout the reception hall...you get the picture.

The marriage? Well, that's another story. The marriage is great...and I'm not just saying that because it's our anniversary. We truly have a great marriage. We have a great relationship. Yeah - we bust each other left, right, and center. And if you hear us speak to each other, you might get the wrong idea. We call each other names. We say mean stuff. BUT...we do it with love and affection. We have to remind The Boy to never talk to a girl he likes the way Mommy and Daddy talk to each other or she'll run, top speed, in the other direction!

My point is (I'll bet you thought I didn't have one!) that NOT all marriages end badly and rather than make the assumption that they do, what's the harm in supposing they don't? No, I can't see the future, but I assure you this is not a "starter marriage."

One day, when I have more time, I'll tell you the story of how The Husband and I met. It's not going to be as good as Ree's story (although there are some similarities), but it's our story and I love it. I love The Husband.

Happy 'Versary, Joboo!

  3. Happy Anniversary! I think I hear Tammy Wynette somewhere...I am sure there is a male version but I am at a loss for it at this early hour. Give me a few minutes and it will come to me. ;-) I bet this questioning coworker is related to the woman in walmart who asked "are these kids all yours?". I said "No, I left some of them at home." Seriously. There is a line between rude and stupid and some people ride it like a circus pony.

  4. Happy Anniversary!

My parents are on their first marriage of 38 years and I am on my first marriage of almost 6 years. We definitely intend for it to be our first and only marriage!

It's kind of sad the things people automatically assume these days.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  9. happy anniversary! i do strongly believe that couples who stay together for the long run are the ones who stick it out and don't consider divorce as an option. it's a mindset!
